Onkyo's new AV receiver uses the AccuEQ speaker measurement system, which also includes the AccuReflex function that ensures seamless integration of the top firing modules. The TX-NR696 works with Sonos multiroom systems and is compatible with DTS Play-Fi, the Pioneer&Onkyo FlareConnect multiroom standard and has Google Chromecast and Google Assistant compatibility (in conjunction with a Google Assistant-enabled device with a built-in microphone). Apple AirPlay 2 is also included, resulting in compatibility with Apple's voice assistant Siri. Online music services such as Amazon Music, Spotify and Tune-In are supported. What is missing, at least at present, is support for Amazon Alexa. The Hi-Res audio options are also as extensive as usual: DSD (2.8/5.6/11.2 MHz), FLAC, WAV, AIFF and ALAC up to 192 kHz/24-bit.
Simple but chic design
The TX-NR696 has seven HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs. An optical and a coaxial digital input and four analogue stereo cinch inputs as well as a dedicated cinch phono input with Mm equaliser are among the connections installed. Of course, neither Bluetooth nor a WLAN module and an Ethernet terminal are missing. As far as the WLAN module is concerned, this also supports the 802.11 ac standard (2x2 MIMO, Quad-Coire SoC). The Onkyo has an assistant to help with the initial setup and comes with a remote control that is particularly easy to use. The 696 can be controlled either with the remote control or using the Onkyo Controller Remote and the Music Streaming App (also for DTS Play-Fi).| Category | details |
